Arsenal senior player to quit after betrayal of promises (not Sanchez) - report

By Dominic Toner

Arsenal’s senior player David Ospina is keen to leave the club in the summer, according to a report.

The Times claim that the 28-year-old has grown frustrated with his role as the cup goalkeeper and wants to leave at the end of the season.

It is understood that his contract is set to expire in 2019, but he wants to quit after falling behind Petr Cech in the pecking order.

The report details that Ospina felt there had been a betrayal of promises when Cech arrived in 2015, with the guarantee he would be competing for a spot with Wojciech Szczesny when he joined 12 months earlier.

Arsenal are also braced to lose star man Alexis Sanchez in the summer after it was reported he had ‘blazing rows’ with manager Arsene Wenger, which resulted in him being benched in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are confident of signing Sanchez in the summer and it would be a colossal blow to the north London club.

The Gunners turn their attention to the Champions League on Tuesday night and are 5-1 down on aggregate to Bayern Muncich going into the second-leg.

Ospina is set to be restored to the starting line-up against Bayern and continue his record of playing in every European game this season.

However, he is yet to feature in the Premier League this campaign and has not got a look in despite the mixed form of Cech.

Football Insider verdict:

Arsenal could suffer a major blow if they lose Ospina in the summer and may need to find two new goalkeepers. Veteran shot stopper Cech is coming to the latter stages of his career and has been guilty of making a couple of poor mistakes this season. Wenger has continued to ignore Ospina in the league despite this and it’s no surprise the Colombian wants to force an exit. Ospina has showed that he is a reliable goalkeeper and should have been given the chance to cement his position in the first-team. The 28-year-old has proved solid in the cup matches and deserved a run in the league. Arsenal could be set for a major reshuffle of personnel in the summer and they will need to ensure they address the goalkeeping situation.
