Arsenal to surely pull plug on Julian Alvarez deal after latest
Arsenal will surely end any plans to sign Julian Alvarez this summer transfer window after yet another underwhelming display at the 2026 World Cup.
The Atletico Madrid attacker was given the nod to start on Tuesday as the South American nation beat Egypt 3-2.
However, the 26-year-old continued his poor form and did not provide any threat to the North African side throughout.
This prompted the Argentine media to criticise the attacker for being too “inconsistent”, as he searches for his first 2026 World Cup goal.
The Gunners have been linked to the striker after Viktor Gyokeres’ inconsistent first season at the Emirates.
Alvarez had been excellent for Atletico Madrid in the 2025-26 campaign and netted 20 goals in 49 matches, with 10 of these coming in the Champions League.
Julian Alvarez ineffective once again vs Egypt
Despite coming into the tournament as one of the most in-form elite strikers, Alvarez has done nothing of note so far.
Overall, he has played in five matches and started in the last three, but has been unable to register a single goal contribution.
Against Egypt, Argentina were in dire need of someone to step up, and this did not prove to be Alvarez yet again.
As a result, La Pagina Millonaria judged his performance to be poor, rating him at a six before writing: “Too inconsistent for what's needed of him. A few runs and dropped back to link up with Messi, and that was about it.
“The Egyptian goalkeeper made a crucial save.
“He lacked the courage to shoot when he had a clear shot on goal at the edge of the box.
“He loosened up more in the second half, in those final minutes when Argentina unleashed their inner fire.”
This is a massive warning sign to Arsenal, as the attacker is not stepping up on the biggest stage.
Therefore, the Gunners should abandon any plans to bring in the attacker and simply move on to other targets.
Who else are Arsenal linked with?
Arsenal have also been heavily linked to Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes this summer transfer window.
The midfielder has been one of the biggest stars at the Magpies in recent years and has been fundamental to their recent Champions League campaigns.
However, Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Guimaraes will not be allowed to leave Newcastle this summer.
Both Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have already left St James’ Park in recent weeks, in what has no doubt been a blow ahead of the new season.
Therefore, Newcastle are extremely reluctant to lose the Brazil international as they aim to return to Europe in the 2026-27 campaign.
