Arsene Wenger heralds Newcastle fans' favourite after Arsenal win
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been singing the praises of Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez after the Frenchman saw his side defeat the Magpies on Saturday.
German playmaker Mesut Ozil netted the only goal of the game, a sublime volley from just inside the penalty box, to secure the three points for the Gunners, continuing their fine run of form over their north east counterparts in recent years.
The north London side have now won 10 matches in a row against Newcastle, a run which stretches back to 2012, with the Magpies’ last win over Arsenal coming in 2010.
Aside from their losing streak against the Gunners, Benitez’s men have been in abysmal form in recent weeks, with Saturday’s defeat condemning them to their eighth defeat in nine games, a winless run which has garnered just one point from a possible 27.
However Wenger insists that he was impressed with what he saw from the opposition at the Emirates Stadium, heralding Benitez, whose name was sung by the Newcastle fans throughout the clash, for the job that he is doing with his side.
Quoted by journalist Lee Ryder on his personal Twitter account, Wenger said: “Rafa is doing a good job. The job of a manager is to get the most potential out of his team and he does that very well.”

The Spanish manager is a firm fans’ favourite on Tyneside after taking on the job back in 2016, sticking out their Championship campaign to return the Magpies to the top flight.
In other Newcastle United news, the Toon Army were left livid with one man’s display against the Gunners.
