Martinez may land new Aston Villa deal after 'unbelievable' development - pundit
Emiliano Martinez could be set for a new contract at Aston Villa after his “unbelievable” showing at this summer’s Copa America.
That is according to ex-Premier League shot-stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 28-year-old Argentina goalkeeper.
Martinez kept his fourth clean sheet of the tournament in the 1-0 final victory over Brazil on 11th July.
He also saved three penalties in the semi-final shoot-out win against Colombia four days earlier.
Villa’s policy in recent years has been to offer top performers improved terms regardless of how recently they signed their deals.
And Kenny predicts that Martinez could be the latest star to benefit from this strategy.

“I think since he’s come to Villa from Arsenal, he’s been brilliant,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“He’s had an unbelievable Copa America and he was the star man in the final as well, I think.
“With the way Aston Villa work, I’m sure they’ll be looking to tie him down just in case someone does come in for him.
“That way they can get as much as they want for him and they deserve that because he’s proved he’s a top-class keeper.
“I’m sure they’ll be looking to extend his contract even though he’s got a few years left on it.
“What a signing. Arsenal won’t be able to believe they let him go. He’s come on so much.
“I remember watching him a couple of years ago when he was on loan at Rotherham and he was struggling really badly. Since then he’s seemed to progress every season.”
Martinez, 28, signed a four-year deal when he joined Villa from Arsenal last summer in a £20million switch.
He started every match for Dean Smith’s side in 2020-21.
