Sources: Aston Villa to test the water with early £15m McNeil bid

Aston Villa are preparing a £15million bid for Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed last month that the Midlands giants have made the 21-year-old one of their top targets for this summer.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that the club are looking to test the water with an early-window offer for McNeil.

That is likely to be around the £15m mark for the Rochdale-born youngster.

Burnley are likely to hold out for a higher fee for McNeil after he signed a new contract last October that runs until 2024.

Villa are in the market to bring in two wide forwards and are preparing for more big spending this summer.

The Midlands giants have already paid out around £250million on transfers during the reign of hugely ambitious owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris.

The plan is to sign two senior forwards who can play out wide, either side of the main striker, in Dean Smith’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

Villa’s need for new attackers has also increased after Trezeguet tore his anterior cruciate ligament against Liverpool and is set to be sidelined for up to a year.

There are also doubts over the future of talismanic skipper Jack Grealish, who is the subject of strong interest from Man City in particular.

McNeil has been targeted after being identified by the Villa recruitment team as a wide forward who is proven in the Premier League and has the capability to improve in a stronger team.

He has made 36 appearances for Burnley this season, scoring two goals and providing five assists, with all seven goal contributions coming in the Premier League.

McNeil produced an outstanding display against Villa in January, scoring in a 3-2 win for Burnley at Turf Moor.
