Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is set to join Championship rivals Reading today, once a medical is completed at the Madejski Stadium, according to Football Insider sources.
News of the transfer, which will go through as a loan deal until the end of the season, has not gone down well with the Villa Park faithful who cannot understand the club’s decision to sanction a move to another team in their division.
Elphick had wanted to get more first team action – something the Villans manager Steve Bruce was unable to guarantee – particularly with John Terry making a comeback after injury.
And the defender had capitalised with a number of fine displays for the club in light of the former Chelsea captain’s absence which is why Villa supporters have reacted as they have done on Twitter.
One fan uttered ‘Terrible decision. Stay,’ while another questioned the club’s logic considering the financial fair play restrictions the club are under.
‘On loan!? What is the point in that? If we are going to part company with him (which we shouldn’t) then surely we should be demanding a sale to help with the FFP?’
After bringing in Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United until the summer, Bruce had warned that he may offload a number of fringe players, and it would seem that Elphick is one of those.
Should everything go successfully then the 30-year-old could potentially make his debut for Reading in Tuesday night’s Championship fixture against Burton Albion.
Here is a selection of the Tweets from Aston Villa fans:
On loan!? What is the point in that @Dr_TonyXia, @retsub12? If we are going to part company with him (which we shouldn’t) then surely we should be demanding a sale to help with the FFP? This makes no sense!#AVFC ????

I have no idea why we would do this.

@Francois_Ali20 played so well when Terry was injured. He’ll be cracking for you lot. Not sure why we’re letting him leave tbh.

When we first signed him, wasn't amazing but in the couple of games that he played while Terry and Samba were injured, he was impressive. Will always give his all and is a good leader

This doesn't make any sense, we should've kept him as great back up. Nobody even knows that the manure kid will be able to handle the Championship.
