Aston Villa confirmed on Thursday that Chris Samba had joined the club on a permanent basis – and the fans on Twitter have been encouraged by the news.

The Villains announced on their official Twitter account that the 33-year-old had penned a one-year deal after being on trial in the West Midlands since February.

The 26-times Congo international had been a free agent since January after he left Panathinaikos and will no doubt add to what is already a very experienced Villa squad.

Samba will be best known for his displays at Blackburn in the Premier League, when he was sometimes dubbed as one of the top centre-backs in the whole top-flight for his no-nonsense displays at centre-back.

Since leaving Ewood Park his career took a downward turn, with spells at Anzhi, QPR and Dinamo Moscow all failing to live up to his spell in Lancashire.

However there’s no doubt that he will be looking to revive his career at Villa Park under the charge of Steve Bruce and in front of the club’s supporters – who have been keen to voice their opinions on yet another defender deal, with one saying Samba is “a beast”.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Samba is the third defender to sign for Villa this summer, following John Terry and right-back Ahmed Elmohamady.

In other Aston Villa news, the Villains are keeping tabs on this international striker who is the captain of his top-flight club.
