Joleon Lescott was released by AEK Athens on Thursday after just three months at the club – and Aston Villa fans on Twitter have found the news highly comical.

The 34-year-old made the move to the Greek Super League side from Villa in the summer.

He was not a popular figure with the Midlands side’s supporters, as he was deemed one of the club’s worst performers in a campaign which saw them suffer relegation.

He had since played in four matches in Greece, but has now been released after picking up a knee injury in October.

Now Villa fans have taken great delight on social media with many finding the saga hilarious.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

As well as performances on the pitch Lescott angered fans with two incidents away from the field.

The 26-time capped England international tweeted a picture of an expensive car following his side’s 6-0 defeat against Liverpool.

The experienced centre-back later apologised for the social media image and claimed it was sent from his pocket without him knowing.

Lescott then stated that the club’s relegation was “a weight off the shoulders,” as they finished bottom of the league with just a measly 17 points.

It remains to be seen where Lescott’s next venture will be, but he sure won’t be welcomed back at Villa Park.
