Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to brutalise midfielder Glenn Whelan for his performance in the 2-1 win against QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday.

Steve Bruce’s side came from a goal behind in West London to earn three points thanks to a brace from Albert Adomah, keeping their hopes of promotion from the Championship alive as they moved up to fifth in the standings.

Although it was a brilliantly earned victory, there was one major negative in the performance according to the Villa faithful on Twitter, with Whelan, 33, being criticised for his part in the game.

Many believe that the summer signing, who arrived from Premier League side Stoke, is way past his best and was unable to keep up with the pace of the game.

One supporter even dubbed the Irishman as a “pathetic excuse of a footballer”.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Whelan has been a mainstay of the Aston Villa first-team since switching Staffordshire for the West Midlands in the summer, making 16 appearances across all competitions, starting all but one games in the Championship.

He is yet to win over the Villa Park support though and that was apparent on Saturday when the Republic of Ireland international was the one player at the centre of criticism despite the win.

In other Aston Villa news, this Premier League powerhouse is eager to move to the Villains in January.
