Aston Villa idol suggests real reason for Matt Targett exit after Steven Gerrard claim

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard “thought he could do better” than now-departed left-back Matt Targett.

The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old’s Newcastle move “suits all parties” after the January arrival of Lucas Digne.

Newcastle confirmed the permanent signing of Targett on 8 June following the left-back’s successful loan spell at St James’ Park in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign.

The former Southampton man has signed a four-year deal on Tyneside which will reportedly net Villa £15million.

Aston Villa loaned the defender out after securing the £25million signing of France international left-back Digne in the January transfer window – one of Gerrard’s first acts in the market.

Agbonlahor suggested the Villa boss moved for the ex-Everton star as he “didn’t rate” Targett’s abilities.

“I think when you bring in someone like Lucas Digne you don’t need someone like Targett,” he told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“You don’t need two top left-backs.

“I rate Targett, I think he’s a good player – but I think this one suited both parties.

“Sometimes managers come in and don’t rate certain players, and maybe Steven Gerrard thought he could do better than Matt Targett so he brought in another left-back.

“I think going to Newcastle really suited him. It was a breath of fresh air for him, and the manager likes him as well. It suits all parties.

“He’ll be wanting to play football and he’s got a chance to do that, so he’ll be buzzing.”

Targett made 16 appearances during his Newcastle loan during the 2021-22 season.

He will reportedly earn £100,000-a-week during his time at St James’ Park.
