Sources: Aston Villa in advanced talks to agree Douglas Luiz deal after Newcastle United bid

Aston Villa are in advanced talks to agree a new contract with Douglas Luiz after a club U-turn, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands giants had been willing to let the Brazil international, 24, go earlier this summer amid interest from Premier League rivals.

But Villa’s failure to land their top two central midfield targets has led to a change of plan from the club hierarchy.

Villa are now working on a deal to tie Luiz down to a new and improved contract.

His current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2023.

That had led to speculation the Brazilian would leave in the current window following interest from Newcastle United and Arsenal among others.

Villa did reject a £30million bid from Newcastle earlier this year at a time when the player’s preference was to head to London.

Agreeing a new contract with Luiz has become a priority for Steven Gerrard’s team after Kalvin Phillips snubbed interest from them to join Man City and their other top target Yves Bissouma signed for Tottenham.

Luiz’s old club Man City previously had a buy-back clause and Pep Guardiola has spoken glowingly of a player he described as “clever with the ball, he’s so physical and so strong”.

Villa have captured Boubacar Kamara from Marseille on a free transfer this summer and he is set to compete with Luiz and new skipper John McGinn for a central midfield role.

Luiz made 35 appearances in all competitions last season, including 31 starts in the Premier League.

He started 16 consecutive league games between December and March for a Villa side who failed to live up to expectations.

The former Girona loanee, who cost Villa a reported £15million, has made 111 appearances in total for Villa.
