Aston Villa 'mean business' after update on 'amazing' bid to sign Smith-Rowe - Hutton

Aston Villa have proved “they mean business” this summer by launching a bid to sign Emile Smith-Rowe from Arsenal, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Villa ace, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it would be “amazing” if the Villans could prise the 20-year-old from the Gunners.

As revealed by Football Insider on Monday (June 21st), Villa are preparing a second bid of £30million for Smith-Rowe and the latest from a club source is they will go even higher if needed to get him.

The offer has come as Arsenal try to tie the starlet down to a new contract.

Hutton suggested his old side were simply “testing the waters” with their opening offer.

However, he applauded Villa’s ambition to even make a move.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They mean business. They’ve obviously looked at him as what would be a top target.

“I think the potential is there for everybody to see after his breakthrough season at Arsenal. It just shows you where Aston Villa are at the moment. Obviously, Buendia picked to go to Villa over Arsenal.

“That shows you where they are at the moment, what they’re pushing for and what they’re striving to be. Why would you not want to be a piece of that?

“I think it was them maybe just testing the waters with the £25million. I think it would take a bit more than that to prise such a talented youngster away from Arsenal. They were always going to kind of rebuff that first offer.

“Whether they go back and try again, we’ll have to wait and see.

“If they could get a hold of a player like that, I think it’d be an amazing piece of business from Villa.”

“They are definitely trying to transform this team to young and hungry, but also can develop in the next 2, 3, 4, 5 years into such a strong team. I like what they’re doing at the moment.”
