Aston Villa will tell midfielder Morgan Sanson he can find a new club this summer, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder has been a bit-part figure since joining from Marseille in January of last year for a fee of £15.5million including add-ons.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that manager Steven Gerrard has made up his mind on Sanson, 27, as he plots a major overhaul of the squad going into the summer.

The Midlands giants are planning to let Sanson go among many of their first-team stars who are deemed surplus to requirements.

He was said at that point to be very difficult to manage, and proved to be so much trouble for two of his former agents they decided to let him go.

Little has happened before or since to convince Villa chiefs that it has been money well spent.

Sanson has started only two Premier League matches among 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

In total, he has played only 19 times for Villa and failed to bring the cohesion to the midfield they had hoped.

The failed Sanson deal raises further questions over the recruitment department headed by Johan Lange, who took over as sporting director in the summer of 2020.

Villa have spent over £330m on signings since promotion to the Premier League in 2019 but have struggled to even establish themselves in the top 10.
