Aston Villa squad will be 'blown away' as Defoe-type signing sealed - McLeish
Alex McLeish has claimed Aston Villa have signed their own Jermain Defoe after completing a deal for Ashley Young.
The former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested while the 35-year-old would not play every game under Dean Smith, his quality would blow the rest of the squad away.
As confirmed on June 17th, Young has signed a one-year deal to return to Villa Park on a free transfer.
The 35-year-old was set to be out of contract at Inter Milan.
McLeish insisted Young’s experience would prove invaluable to the whole Aston Villa next season.
He suggested he could have a similar impact as Defoe has had at Rangers.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You have to have players you can put on that field you can trust. Ashley Young has been one of those players for many many years.
“I’ll give you another name we’ve chatted about for quite a long time: Jermain Defoe. A talisman and an absolute legend that the players can look up to.
“Ashley Young carries that kind of make-up into Aston Villa. A lot of the young players will benefit from his presence.
“I’m sure, like Jemain, he’s not going to play every game. But when he does, I’m sure he will give the team a quality that they will be blown away by.”
Young played 34 times across all competitions as he helped Inter to the Serie A title last season.
He made 190 appearances for Villa over a four-and-a-half-year spell between 2007 and 2011.
