Aston Villa summer signing named in EFL team of the week

By Aramide Oladipo

Aston Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has been named in the English Football League team of the week following his fine performance against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

The 24-year-old produced a string of great saves to ensure that Steve Bruce’s side picked up a point against the Londoners in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

The Manchester United loanee who rejoined the Championship side in the summer transfer window, demonstrated his ability in the second half, producing a smart stop with his feet from Brentford’s Josh Clarke before pulling off a fingertip save from Ollie Watkins.

The important saves meant that the goalkeeper enjoyed his first league clean sheet of the new season.

Johnstone was the only Villa player selected in the EFL team of the week which was revealed on their official website on Monday afternoon for the sixth matchday of the campaign.

The result means that Villa have only managed to win one of their opening six Championship matches this season and they are currently sitting in 18th position in the league table, just two points above the relegation zone.

The shot-stopper is likely to feature in the midweek Championship match against Middlesborough on Tuesday evening at Villa Park.
