Kieran Maguire: Aston Villa to 'smash the cartel' as summer masterplan officially confirmed
Aston Villa are looking to establish themselves as a global brand in order to shake up football’s financial elite.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Villa’s recently revealed pre-season plans.
Villa announced on Tuesday (26 April) that they will embark on a pre-season tour of Australia in July.
Steven Gerrard’s side will take on Leeds United and Brisbane Road in Queensland as well as Man United in Perth.
As quoted by Birmingham Live on Wednesday (27 April), Villa CEO Christian Purslow claimed: “Our next phase is more global.”
And Maguire claims that lucrative pre-season friendlies are one way to propel Villa to worldwide attention.

“There is a big Premier League fanbase in Australia, so they are going to an existing audience,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“But the fact you are making yourself visible there does help to raise your profile.
“It shows a willingness to reach out and attach yourself to the fanbase in Australia.
“But turning overseas interest into cash is a slow and challenging process because overseas broadcasters are focused on a small group of clubs.
“Trying to smash that cartel is challenging This is one avenue they can explore.
“They need to offer something that Chelsea, Liverpool Man United etc don’t have. That is always going to be difficult.”
Villa earned £18million in commercial income in 2020-21, the last recorded financial year.
They will play a fourth friendly in Australia against an as of yet unconfirmed side.
