Why Aston Villa will finish above Leeds this season

COMMENT by Amir Mir

Aston Villa have once again shown their powers during the January transfer window as they desperately aim to secure a promotion spot.

Steve Bruce’s side have added six additions this month, with another further two deals set to be completed on deadline day.

On-loan goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane, James Bree, Birkir Bjarnason and Jacob Bedeau are the confirmed deals.

They will be followed by Brentford striker Scott Hogan and Premier League left-back Neil Taylor which will make the Midlands club a force during the second half of the campaign.

Villa’s defeat to Brentford on Tuesday night leaves them marooned in 13th and a distant 14 points behind fourth-placed Leeds in the table, with the Yorkshire club having a game in hand against the Midlands club.

But after Villa’s spending spree, they have installed into the team a group of players that have increased their chances of reaching their goals.

However, for Villa to finish in the top six, one of the current promotion hopefuls will need to drop out and Garry Monk’s side may be that team.

They were recently beaten by non-league side Sutton in the FA Cup, which showed the cracks beneath the first XI and the small squad Monk has to work with.

Results such as this can affect your season and with Bruce’s side likely to make a charge with their new additions, their promotion rivals will have to watch out.

History suggests that one side always falls towards the end, Derby in recent seasons are an example of that.

Nonetheless, Villa have no doubt added quality and quantity this month which suggests, they are in desperate need of securing promotion.
