'Disgusting' - Aston Villa fans savage Joao Gomes after what he did vs Brighton

Joao Gomes had a horrendous Premier League debut for Aston Villa on Sunday as he was sent off in a 4-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer after Youri Tielemans was sold to Manchester United.

After making his competitive debut against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final, there was hope that the Brazil international could kick on and become a real star player at Villa Park. However, against Brighton, he was simply awful.

Firstly, he made a mistake that led to the Seagulls’ fourth goal, before he was sent off for lashing out at Georginio Rutter after a VAR review.

It was a horrific debut from the midfielder, who is meant to be one of Villa’s star signings of the summer.

As a result, Villa supporters have been quick to slam Gomes’ performance, with many labelling it as ‘one of the worst debuts in history’.

The defeat to Brighton was a dark day for many Aston Villa supporters.

Fans had feared that their lack of incomings to replace their star players would come back to haunt them, and their performance against the Seagulls made it clear just how badly their squad had been weakened.

However, the fact that one of their new signings was a massive factor in the defeat has only served to rub more salt in the wounds in a terrible opening Premier League fixture.

As a result, many Aston Villa fans have taken to X to blast Gomes’ performance as the midfielder put in one of the worst Premier League debuts in living memory.

How bad was Gomes vs Brighton?

Despite his errors, Gomes does have some solid stats from the game.

According to Fotmob on 23 August, he completed all 15 of his attempted passes, created one chance, completed all of his attempted dribbles, made four tackles and won six out of nine ground duels.

However, the fact that this positive display collapsed in on itself from essentially five minutes of madness will be alarming for both Unai Emery and the fanbase.

Hopefully, once Gomes returns from his ban, he will finally be able to show supporters his true quality and have a positive impact on the pitch throughout the entire game.
