Japan’s media have been full of praise for Zion Suzuki’s performance despite their late 2-1 defeat to Brazil in the 2026 World Cup.

The goalkeeper has emerged as an Aston Villa target in recent weeks and put on another fantastic display on Monday.

Despite conceding twice, the 23-year-old kept the East Asian nation in the tie multiple times with numerous fantastic stops.

As a result, the Japanese media have been quick to label Suzuki as their “MVP” after he delivered a “perfect” performance.

The goalkeeper is being eyed by Aston Villa amid reports that Emi Martinez could be on his way out of Villa Park.

After Japan’s World Cup defeat, Suzuki is now set to return to Parma, where he also had an impressive season in Italy.

Japan media praise Zion Suzuki for ‘MVP’ display vs Brazil

Suzuki was no doubt one of the best players on the pitch against Brazil.

The goalkeeper was key to keeping Japan in the game, with the nation only minutes away from taking the South American giants to extra time.

As a result, Japan’s media was quick to praise his performance, with Football Channel even giving the Parma star an eight rating despite the defeat.

Their review of his performance read: “Delivered a perfect performance in both situational awareness and saving. Did not let the opponent gain momentum (MVP).”

Therefore, this will no doubt excite the Aston Villa hierarchy as the goalkeeper proved he can make some top saves against some of the best players in the world on the biggest stage.

Will Aston Villa make a move for Suzuki this summer?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Villa are keeping tabs on Suzuki with a view to striking a deal this summer.

The goalkeeper is one of several players that the Birmingham outfit are assessing at the moment to potentially replace Martinez.

Villa are happy to cash in on their number one this summer as he enters the final year of his contract.

James Trafford is another keeper Villa are keeping an eye on, who could be available for around £40million.

Suzuki is believed to be a cheaper option for Unai Emery as they prepare for their return to the Champions League.

However, it remains to be seen who Villa will look to bring in this summer as they look to solve their goalkeeping issues once and for all.
