Aston Villa youngster Bradley Burrowes is set to undergo a medical at Wigan Athletic on Monday ahead of a season-long loan, sources have told Football Insider.

The Latics have agreed a deal for the 18-year-old's signature despite interest from a number of clubs in the Championship and League One.

The England youth international appeared on the bench for Villa's opening games of the season against PSG in the Super Cup and against Brighton in the Premier League, after making his league debut at the age of 17 last season.

Burrowes is extremely highly rated at Villa Park and scored an impressive 18 goals in 22 games for the youth sides last season, including 12 in Premier League 2.

He will expect to go straight into Gary Caldwell's team amid what has been a difficult start to the League One season for Wigan.

The former Newcastle centre-back's arrival saw them stay up last season, but the new campaign has begun with three consecutive defeats.

Bradley Burrowes set for first senior test

As far as youth football goes, Burrowes has been extremely impressive at the beginning of his career.

Despite playing against players as much as three years older than him, and sometimes more, the youngster has thrived in Premier League 2.

He notched 12 goals and three assists in just 15 appearances in the competition last season, and has featured at centre-forward, right-wing and even attacking midfield.

Beyond just his goal contributions, Burrowes stats leave much to be excited about.

Last season in Premier League 2, the 18-year-old took 3.25 shots, created 1.39 chances, completed 1.06 successful dribbles and took 5.31 touches in the opposition box per 90 minutes.

The transition to senior football is often the most difficult part of a young player's development, however. It remains to be seen how Burrowes takes that step this season.

Burrowes' exit has made possible by the impending £47million signing of Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG.

The 18-year-old has undergone a medical at Villa Park ahead of signing a long-term contract, having impressed both for the European champions and at the World Cup for Senegal.

The winger may be a future problem for Burrowes' hopes of making it into the first team at Villa, but his versatility will be his benefit.

It is hoped that both Burrowes and Mbaye will be a key part of a strong new string of talented youngsters coming through under Unai Emery.
