Aston Villa must accelerate Lucas Digne deal 'ahead of expected sale'
Aston Villa must complete Lucas Digne’s sale to PSG as soon as possible after his dire performance in France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-finals.
The 32-year-old is believed to be finalising a move to the Champions League holders this summer transfer window after his release clause was triggered.
Villa are expected to net less than £10million for the left-back. However, his departure could be a major blessing for the club and Unai Emery.
On Tuesday, the defender played a major role in France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals.
The defender conceded a penalty, and his performance was blasted by the French media.
Therefore, Villa must ensure his transfer to PSG is completed as soon as possible before they get cold feet.
Lucas Digne ‘disappointed’ vs Spain
Against Spain, Digne heavily struggled.
Up against Lamine Yamal, the left-back simply did not have an answer for the tricky Barcelona winger, which eventually saw him concede a penalty.
However, Yamal was all over him throughout the match, and the French could have easily lost by a bigger margin.
As a result, Maxifoot did not hold back in their assessment of the defender, and gave him a two rating before writing: “Ahead of his expected transfer to Paris Saint-Germain this summer, the French left-back was a disappointment in this match.
“Up against Yamal, the French international struggled against Spain's attacks in his area.
“Too often on the back foot, he ultimately ruined his performance with the penalty he conceded after a poor clearance against Yamal.
“He was replaced in the 72nd minute by Theo Hernandez.”
As a result, Villa need to ensure that the ageing full-back is off their books as soon as possible.
Therefore, they must encourage PSG to complete the deal, and Villa should do everything in their power to ensure the deal is done.
How bad was Digne vs Spain?
According to Fotmob on 14 July, Digne really did not have a good game against Spain.
Overall, he completed just 85 per cent of his passes, did not complete a single successful cross, made just one defensive contribution, was dribbled past once and committed one foul.
Digne previously had a similarly unsuccessful display for Aston Villa last season, when he conceded a penalty in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Europa League semi-finals.
Therefore, it is clear that the full-back is not good enough to step up in big games for club or country.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Digne does sign for PSG over the coming weeks.
