Aston Villa must pull out of Jonathan David pursuit as 0.23 and 0% stats emerge
Aston Villa have been handed a warning to halt their Jonathan David pursuit after his lacklustre display in Canada’s 3-0 defeat to Morocco on Saturday.
The 2026 World Cup hosts were knocked out in the round of 16, despite a flurry of chances.
The Juventus striker was arguably one of the worst players on the pitch for the Canadians as he struggled to provide a consistent threat up top.
Football Insider has revealed that Aston Villa were considering a move for David this summer, who has been a long-term target.
However, if his performance for Canada was anything to go by, the Birmingham outfit would do well to look past the 26-year-old.
David had moved to Juventus on a free transfer last summer, but was unable to hit form in the Serie A.
Jonathan David flops as Canada exit 2026 World Cup
David had a mixed World Cup with Canada.
In the five matches he played, he netted three times. However, all of these goals came in the 6-0 demolition of Qatar in the group stages.
In both of Canada’s knockout matches, David struggled to produce anything noteworthy in attack, which will surely worry any Villa officials watching on.
According to Fotmob on 4 July, he only managed two shots, completed 75 per cent of his passes, had a 0.23 xG, created zero chances, failed to win a single aerial duel and even committed three fouls, one of which saw him yellow carded.
Therefore, Aston Villa may do well to not pursue David any further this summer.
Who else could Aston Villa sign this summer?
Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Villa are looking to make a move for Celta Vigo midfielder Ilaix Moriba this summer transfer window.
A potential £15million bid could soon be placed for the 23-year-old midfielder, despite it being below the £25m asking price.
Celta Vigo need a big sale this summer to balance their PSR issues, and the Guinea international could be the player who is out the door.
Villa are hopeful that a cut-price deal could be struck, with the lure of Champions League football on their side.
However, it remains to be seen if Villa are able to secure the midfielder’s signature before the end of the transfer window.
