Sources reveal the reason Emiliano Martinez’s move from Aston Villa to Juventus collapsed
Emiliano Martinez could yet remain at Aston Villa beyond the 1 September transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.
The Argentine goalkeeper had been closing in on a move to Juventus, but that deal has since collapsed, with the Old Lady diverting their attention towards Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario instead.
It is understood that Martinez’s ongoing finger injury was a major contributing factor to that deal falling through, and will continue to play a key role in the coming weeks.
Sources have indicated that Martinez is running out of options for a move as the season nears, and could even be forced to remain at Villa Park.
Clubs are also aware that the 33-year-old is on a significant contract at Villa, providing another barrier to a potential deal.
The player is keen to move away from the second city outfit, but wants to ensure that he can continue playing at the highest possible level.
Emiliano Martinez backed into corner at Aston Villa
Martinez has been firmly established as Villa’s number one in recent years, but that will not be the case for him next season.
The club have been well aware of his desire to move away, and have instead made their own moves in the transfer market to shore up their goalkeeping department.
They are on the verge of signing Zion Suzuki from Parma in a deal worth £30million, with the Japan international seen as their undisputed new number one.
Marco Bizot is set to continue in a similar backup role to the one that he occupied last season, meaning there is little room for Martinez if he ultimately stays put.
Villa have not planned for him to remain at the club, and the fact that he occupies a big wage will also provide an element of concern for them.
However, with Martinez’s injury causing issues for interested clubs, it is becoming an increasing possibility that he could still be at Villa beyond the deadline.
Aston Villa backed to make Gabriel Martinelli move
Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson recently told Football Insider that Villa could be the perfect destination for Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli this summer.
The Gunners are happy to offload the Brazilian after strengthening on the flanks, but have only really received genuine interest from Galatasaray so far this summer.
The wideman is expected to be allowed to leave the Emirates Stadium for a fee of £38m, and Borson believes that Villa and Newcastle should be prime candidates to sign him.
However, both sides are yet to make a move for the Arsenal man, who has fallen down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta.
