Who is Geny Catamo? The £34m-rated dribble king wanted by Aston Villa
Aston Villa are reportedly considering a bid for Sporting CP ace Geny Catamo this transfer window.
Reports indicate that Villa are one of many Premier League clubs interested in the 25-year-old ahead of the final weeks of the window.
Sporting CP want £34million for the winger, who are reluctant to sell the Mozambique international.
The winger played 29 matches in Liga Portugal last season and scored six goals.
Unai Emery may view Catamo as a potential replacement for Morgan Rogers, who recently made the move to Chelsea for a record fee.
Below, Football Insider has outlined everything you need to know about the winger.
Who is Geny Catamo?
After showing promise in academies in his homeland, Catamo made his professional debut for Amora in 2018.
His promise quickly caught the eye of Sporting CP, who then swooped in and signed the winger in 2019.
After spending some time in the academy, he was loaned out to Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2022 and made 10 appearances as well as collected three assists.
From here, he was loaned out again, this time to Maritimo from 2022 to 2023, where he racked up another 11 appearances.
Upon returning to Sporting CP, he became a first-teamer and helped the club win the top-flight after making 41 appearances in all competitions.
Since then, he has become a major player at the club, and has won three trophies to date.
On top of this, he is also a Mozambique international, and has 43 caps to date, and has netted 14 times.
He was part of the squad that beat Gabon in December 2025 to secure the country’s first-ever win in AFCON.
How good is Catamo?
According to Fotmob on 28 July, Catamo is an excellent attacking winger.
Overall, he averaged 0.28 goals, a 0.16 xG, 2.26 shots, 1.01 shots on target, 0.09 assists, a 0.18 xA and 2.03 successful dribbles per 90 minutes in the Portugal top-flight last season.
Therefore, if these stats can be replicated, he could become a top player for Villa.
However, it remains to be seen if O Jogo’s report comes to anything as Villa eye further additions before the transfer window closes at the start of September.
