Troy Deeney is blatantly wrong, Aston Villa star Zion Suzuki must be baffled
Zion Suzuki has been a sensation since signing across the dotted line at Aston Villa during the summer window.
Supporters expected big things from the talented goalkeeper, but very few would have prepared themselves for such key displays so early on.
The 24-year-old has three clean sheets in all competitions, has made some impressive saves, and loves playing with the ball at his feet.
His calmness in possession has helped the back four immensely, and that evident as Unai Emery's side claimed a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, 17 October.
Johan Manzambi scored the only goal at St James' Park, rightly earning him a spot in Troy Deeney's Premier League Team of the Week.
But none of his teammates joined him, and Suzuki can be especially disappointed by that decision, especially given the reasoning for his selection.
Troy Deeney completely overlooks Zion Suzuki
Instead of Suzuki, the former Watford striker chose Bart Verbruggen, who was mostly a passenger during Brighton's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace.
It was an incredible display by Fabian Hurzeler's side; there's no doubt about that. But Verbruggen hardly did anything.
Deeney admitted that, writing: "I was looking at other teams, but there were so many games this week with very poor quality.
"Even David Raya against Forest had two shots to deal with, terrible from a goalkeeping point of view, so Verbruggen goes in for his clean sheet."
If that's his case for Brighton's goalkeeper, why on earth wasn't Suzuki his first-choice, having played an important role in Villa's 1-0 win at the weekend?
Which other players impressed vs Newcastle?
It was a complete performance from the Villans, and one that deserved more goals. Still, one goal was enough to seal all three points.
Nicolas Jackson was impressive through the middle, making key runs, constantly pressing, and was unlucky not to get his reward.
Tyrone Mings was also a surprise against Newcastle, eventually having to star at full-back after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's injury left Emery with no other choice.
It would be harsh to axe anyone based on the performance, but Emery is likely to make quite a few changes against Viking in the Champions League.
