Alex McLeish has claimed Helder Costa needs to quit Leeds United to get his career back on track.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Portuguese winger lacks motivation at Elland Road.
As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds are open to offers for the 27-year-old in a bid to raise transfer funds this summer.
Costa initially joined the Whites on loan from Wolves in 2019 and played his part in their Championship-winning season.
Leeds then turned his temporary stay permanent for a £15million fee last summer.
However, he has fallen down the pecking order under Marcelo Bielsa and has made just 10 league starts so far.
McLeish, who was in charge of Scotland for Costa’s one and only Portugal appearance, admitted he expected much more from the former Wolves forward.
He questioned the winger’s motivation and suggested he could do with a fresh start at a new club.
McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “He’s not excelled the way we thought he would.
“He scored a goal playing against us (Scotland) for Portugal. He snuck in behind Andy Robertson for one of the goals.
“I thought: ‘Yeah, this guy, he is one of the new Portuguese generation.’ They always produce really skilful players, technical players, but for some reason, he’s been a bit-part player at Leeds.
“We were thinking he would play every week and start every game. He’s only come on in little fragments and sometimes not done enough when he has been introduced.
“It’s almost like there’s a lack of motivation there and he needs to go and get a new club and freshen up.”
