Aubameyang blasted for 'not trying' at Arsenal after 'surprising' reveal - pundit

Kevin Phillips has slammed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for not “trying as hard” at Arsenal after renewing his contract last year.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 32-year-old should be at the “peak of his powers”.

Aubameyang was omitted from the Arsenal starting lineup as the north London side slumped to a last-gasp 2-1 defeat against Everton on Monday (6 December).

As per OptaJoe on Twitter (6 December), the Gunners captain has now failed to score in his last six Premier League appearances – his longest barren run since 2014.

The Gabon international signed a fresh three-year deal last September, ending speculation about his future.

When asked what could be behind Aubameyang’s barren spell, Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a tough one. I’ve always said that he is a class player.

“It’s just so surprising that he’s gone as long as he has without a goal, compared to what we’ve seen from him at Arsenal.

“You could attribute it to him coming towards the end of his career, but 32 years old in this day and age is nothing.

“He should be at the peak of his powers right now.

“Sometimes you lose that bit of hunger, and from the outside looking in it seems like that could be the case. Maybe he is not trying as hard since signing that big new contract.

“He’s got the talent and quality, so I can only put it down to lack of desire at the moment.”

Aubameyang has scored four league goals for Arsenal this season in 14 top-flight appearances.

The Gunners are seventh in the Premier League – four points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham.

In other news, a pundit has claimed big-name exit could pave the way for three new Arsenal signings after update.
