Newcastle United have lacked luck with strikers this season but could rid their woes in the summer by snapping up the signing of Crystal Palace’s hitman Christian Benteke.
The Sun have claimed on their website that the 27-year-old powerhouse looks destined for the exit door from the Eagles at the end of the season, regardless of whether the club suffer the ignominy of relegation or retain their top flight status.
It is stated that the London-based club would look for a fee in the region of £20million, which would see them register a £7million loss on the money spent on signing him from Liverpool in 2016.
While the eight-figure price tag would represent a record breaking spend for the Magpies, dwarfing the £16million spent on Michael Owen back in 2005, he is the right man for the club to splash the cash on.
A striker who splits opinion as a result of his attitude on the pitch, he is the sort of forward who demands to be the centre of attention up front, and that is exactly what Newcastle could offer him.
His goal tally this season might look disappointing – with just two goals in 24 appearances – but he has proven his worth as a team player in recent months with a further six assists.
At Newcastle, Islam Slimani has yet to prove his worth due to his injury, while Dwight Gayle and Joselu are hardly the most prolific of strikers, and so an improvement is definitely needed in the summer.
With 68 top flight goals under his belt, Benteke could well be the answer, and the Magpies should be looking to smash their record in a move which would excite the Toon Army.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the Magpies seem certain to re-sign a fan favourite if all goes to plan in the summer.
