Darren Bent has ripped into Alex Iwobi after another “awful” performance for Everton in Wednesday’s League Cup defeat to Manchester United.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, was left fuming with what he saw from the Nigeria international in the Toffees’ 2-0 loss.
Iwobi started on the right-wing but was largely ineffectual as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United progressed to the semi-final after two late goals.
Iwobi has now started Everton’s last six matches, helping Ancelotti’s side to four wins and one draw prior to the United defeat.
He has been used as both a winger and a makeshift full-back in the absence of Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne.
However, Bent was less than impressed with what he saw from the versatile winger and insisted his contribution in the final third was the biggest issue for Carlo Ancelotti.
“He’s tried Iwobi at full-back and I’ve said before, his final delivery’s not good enough,” said Bent.
“He showed it again last night (v Manchester United) where he gets to certain areas and his final delivery’s just terrible. Whether he overhits a cross, whether it’s a pass, it’s awful.”
After graduating from the Arsenal academy, Iwobi spent four seasons with the North London club before making the switch to Everton in the summer of 2019 in a deal reported to have been worth £34million.
The 44-time Nigeria international has since made 38 league appearances for Everton, with just one goal under his belt
