Noel Whelan claims Carlos Vinicius could prove to be a bargain signing after an impressive debut for Tottenham.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League striker insists that the Benfica loanee is exactly the sort of player Spurs have been crying out for in recent years.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, Spurs have the option to buy the 25-year-old for £36million in the terms of his loan deal.
He made his first appearance for the Lilywhites against LASK on Thursday night and chipped in with two assists in a 3-0 win.
Whelan insists that Tottenham have been searching for a natural centre-forward to take the load off Harry Kane and that Vinicius looks to be the perfect solution.
Asked how big a boost the striker’s impressive start is for Tottenham, Whelan told Football Insider: “It’s massive, it takes a bit of pressure off Harry Kane, they needed another out-and-out striker.
“You can’t keep going through a season thinking Harry Kane’s going to be fit forever, he needs that rest, he’s been away with England and he’s going to start every Premier League game for Tottenham, that’s for sure.
“When it comes to European games, if you can give him that respite and that little bit of sitting on the bench, resting your legs and you’ve got another out-and-out striker with that sort of quality to bring people into play and get assists, score goals, you’ve got to take that opportunity.
“The games, when you’re a successful side, come thick and fast whether you’re in the Premier League or in Europe. I think they did need that extra centre-forward up there and he looks like a great signing.
“If he carries on with that kind of form, he’s going to be a snip of a signing as well.”
