Barney Stewart ‘in the frame’ for Celtic move as summer swoop plotted to sign Falkirk star

Celtic are “keeping tabs” on Falkirk striker Barney Stewart and have him on their radar as an option to bolster their attack this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Bhoys are working to try to add to their attacking options ahead of next season, and it is understood that the 22-year-old is one option who will be “in the frame” for them in the upcoming transfer window.

Stewart is attracting interest from other Scottish clubs at the moment, while sources have indicated that there are also a number of English clubs that could be willing to make a move for him.

The youngster is Falkirk’s top goalscorer this season, with eight strikes to his name from just 16 Scottish Premiership games.

Celtic’s transfer plans are set to see a new frontman be a top priority for them in the coming months, and Stewart is viewed as a promising talent with huge potential at Parkhead.

Celtic want Barney Stewart as long-term project

Celtic’s dominance in Scotland has seen them become renowned for picking off some of the best talent from elsewhere in the country in recent years, and that could be about to play out again with Stewart.

The Glasgow giants have been heavily linked with both Motherwell’s Tawanda Maswanhise and Hearts star Claudio Braga in recent months, and now they have their eyes fixed on Stewart ahead of the window.

The starlet has been a big reason behind John McGlynn’s side securing a top-half finish in their first campaign back in the Premiership, and that has unsurprisingly made clubs elsewhere sit up and take notice.

Stewart’s form has been hugely promising during his first campaign in the top-flight, and he currently boasts a stronger goals per 90 record than Daizen Maeda, who has been so effective for the Bhoys in recent years.

His efforts for the Bairns this term appear set to have a number of options open to him this summer, with an opportunity in the English Football League also a possibility.

Celtic are clear admirers of the Scotland U21 international and view him as a player who could develop into a top talent in the future.

Bhoys could yet hand new contract to Kelechi Iheanacho

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness recently told Football Insider that a decision regarding Kelechi Iheanacho’s future at Celtic has been put on hold until the end of the season.

The Nigerian frontman is out of contract at the end of the season, but the club hold a one-year option in their favour to extend his deal for a further campaign.

Iheanacho has scored some crucial goals for Martin O’Neill’s men this term, not least last time out, when he came from the bench to net a vital winner away at Hibernian in the second half.

Wyness suggested that the 29-year-old is effectively playing for his future at Celtic Park, but added that his recent form could yet see him in line for an extension.

Keeping Iheanacho would provide further attacking depth for the Bhoys heading into next season, but new faces are still expected to arrive in that area of the pitch.
