Barry explains why Newcastle United match was his most embarrassing moment

By Aramide Oladipo

Midfielder Gareth Barry has revealed that his most embarrassing Premier League moment took place as an Aston Villa player against Newcastle United.

The 36-year-old, who is now plying his trade with West Bromwich Albion, is set to break the Premier League appearances record previously held by Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

The former England international will make his 633rd league appearance should he feature for Tony Pulis’ side in their trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Monday evening.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail about his upcoming achievement, the midfielder pinpoints a match at St James’ Park as his most embarrassing moment in the Premier League.

“The Kieron Dyer / Lee Bowyer fight,” he said.

“I don’t enjoy seeing that picture.

“People have always got something to say on that.”

During the 2004-05 campaign, Villa enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory against Newcastle with Barry scoring two goals from the penalty spot and former striker Juan Pablo Angel getting himself on the scoresheet.

However, the match will be remembered for Newcastle teammates Bowyer and Dyer fighting on the pitch with Barry separating the two before they were both sent-off.

The midfielder has enjoyed a fine record against the Magpies, scoring four goals and providing one assist against them throughout his career.
