Barton names Tottenham star better than record breaker despite major gaffe
Former Newcastle United and Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has said that Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele is a better midfielder than Paul Pogba but made a major gaffe when discussing his international chances.
The Belgian international, who has 72 caps under his belt for his country, has been a linchpin in the centre of the park for Spurs in recent weeks, putting in commanding performances against both Arsenal and Juventus to win the plaudits from both fans and pundits alike.
Having recovered from his ankle injury, which limited his playing time early in the season, he has been a regular in the starting XI, and Barton has said that he has been performing better than Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, who broke the record of the most expensive purchase for a British club in history at a fee of nearly £90million.
However, in delivering his verdict, the ex-Burnley man suggested he could get in the French World Cup squad ahead of Pogba, with talkSPORT host Alan Brazil also failing to pick up on the major mistake made by his guest.
Speaking on Brazil’s Sports Breakfast programme on talkSPORT (19/02, 06:00), he said: “He’s top drawer.
“A lot of things are levelled at him, like he doesn’t score enough goals, which I don’t think he does, but on the flip side of that is role in the team is the first receiver.
“I think he’s shown incredible composure. Not an international? Not capped by France.
“Can he get in the French World Cup squad? He’s better than Pogba and Pogba’s probably going to get in.”
Barton realised his mistake moments later, acknowledging that he is a Belgian international, who is in line to take on England during the group stage of the World Cup this summer, which will take place in Russia.
