Benitez delivers update on situations of Newcastle mainstays
By Matt Farr
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has revealed a decision will be made on the futures of his out of contract stars ‘soon.’
Senior duo Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita, who have both featured regularly in the first-team squad this season, are both out of contract in a matter of weeks, and a decision has not yet been made on their futures.
Sammy Ameobi and Haris Vuckic also find themselves on the brink of being released by the club, but Benitez has revealed they will know of their futures soon.
He told the Chronicle: “They will know soon. The majority of them will know, if not all of them.
“After the meeting we will start working. We will give our ideas and have discussions with agents.”

It remains a strong possibility that Gouffran and Anita could be both be offered extended deals at the club, as they prepare for life in the Premier League.
Anita, 28, admitted to the Chronicle earlier this month that he would like to stay at the club, where he has made 148 appearances in all competitions since his arrival in 2012.
But the club’s reported move to sign left-winger Christian Atsu on a permanent deal this summer, suggests the future of Gouffran is less likely to be resolved with a new contract.
Meanwhile, fringe duo Ameobi and Vuckic look destined for the exit door at St. James’ Park, with the Chronicle having recently suggested that the pair were ‘moving to pastures new.‘
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle will need a squad worthy of competing among the elite in the Premier League this season, but that does not mean the likes of Anita and Gouffran can’t have a role to play as squad players. The two have been key figures in ensuring Newcastle’s safe return to the top-flight this season, but have struggled to make an impact in the Premier League in previous seasons. However, Benitez knows what they can offer, and the experienced duo could be of use. As for Ameobi and Vuckic, it simply hasn’t worked out for them at the club, and their absence from the squad will not be missed if they were to be released this summer.
