Benitez details Newcastle stance on future of £35,000-a-week star – reports

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has demanded that club chiefs refuse all offers for defender Jamaal Lascelles this summer, according to a report.
The Sun claims Chelsea want the 24-year-old at Stamford Bridge after his impressive season.
They’re looking for more English players and a new centre-back and Lascelles fits the bill.
However, Lascelles only signed a new contract in October last year and he’s tied to St James’ Park until 2023.
However, the Newcastle Chronicle claims that the new contract only put him up to £35,000-a-week, with other stars earning more like Jono Shelvey who reportedly gets £80,000 a week.
They say that could cause problems in the summer if his agent starts getting much bigger offers.
Football Insider verdict:
There are a few unknowns here. Firstly, will Benitez still be at Newcastle in the summer? Fans will hope so but it’s not a certainty given the turbulent year and with Mike Ashley still in place. Then there’s the issue of Lascelles wages. He got a big hike when he signed his new contract last year but apparently it’s not even half what Shelvey gets. That’s going to be a problem when Chelsea come calling. Then there’s the player himself. It will be hard to not want that one big move no matter how committed to Newcastle you are. So, three big unknowns and unfortunately they all seem to play against Newcastle here. If we were betting men…
