Newcastle United are second favourites to sign Stoke forward Xherdan Shaqiri in the January transfer window, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
BetVictor have the Magpies priced at 6/1 to land Shaqiri, 26, before the end of next month while Arsenal are currently in pole position as the 4/1 favourites.
Everton (8/1), Tottenham (8/1) and Liverpool (8/1) are also thought to be in the running to snap up the Switzerland international in January as Stoke slip down towards the Premier League relegation zone.
Shaqiri, who is known for his lightning pace and ability to cut in from the wings, has been a consistent performer for Stoke ever since he signed from Inter Milan for £12million in 2015.
The former Bayern Munich forward has made 18 appearances across all competitions this term for the Potters, scoring four goals and supplying five assists in the process.
However he has been unable to help Mark Hughes’ side from slipping down the Premier League table in recent weeks as the Staffordshire club has lost five of their last six outings.
Wide-forward Shaqiri would no doubt be a great solution to the shortage of goals that Newcastle have been unable to score this season, however any move would likely be an expensive one due to his importance in the Stoke first-team.
Rafa Benitez is unlikely to have a big budget going into January but he may be boosted if Mike Ashley successfully sells the club to Amanda Staveley.
In other Newcastle United news, two European clubs are eyeing up seven-figure swoops for this Magpies senior player in January.
