Celtic are favourites to sign Stoke midfielder Joe Allen, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
SkyBet have the Hoops priced at 4/1 to sign the Wales international, with West Ham (9/2) also in the running to sign the 27-year-old.
Allen is 2/7 to stay at Stoke for the rest of January to try and keep them in the Premier League and out of the relegation zone.
Allen joined Stoke from Liverpool in 2016, for a fee of £13million.
The Premier League midfielder has worked with Celtic manger Brendan Rogers before, firstly at Swansea then at Liverpool, where he signed Allen for £15million.
He has played 20 times this season for a Stoke team that are struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League and sacked manager Mark Hughes after a 2-1 defeat to Coventry in the round of the FA Cup, a game which Allen didn’t play in.
Football Insider verdict
Whilst Brendan Rodgers would no doubt love to be reunited for the third time with he player he rates very highly, this move seems unlikely to happen for a few reasons. Firstly, the cost of the transfer. Stoke will be wanting at least £10million for the player, and that is too much for the Bhoys to spend on a transfer at this moment in time. Secondly, Stoke won’t want to sell such an important player whilst they are in the middle of a relegation battle, it would go down very badly with their manager. Lastly, Stoke don’t currently have a manager. Any transfer business will have to be put in the background until the new man takes the job.
