Newcastle United have emerged as clear favourites to sign Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw in the January transfer window, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
Ladbrokes have the Magpies priced at 6/4 favourites to strike up a deal for Shaw, 22, by the time February comes around with Tottenham (3/1) second in the running.
Newcastle were previously joint favourites with Everton but according to Ladbrokes they are clear of the other contenders to sign the former Southampton defender who Jose Mourinho may decide to cash in on next month.
The Mirror has previously reported that Man United will only consider selling Shaw for £20million after valuing the player well above what the Magpies could surely afford.
It is understood that instead, the Tynesiders will seek out a loan deal for the left-back, who is desperate for game-time after struggling to break into the Man United first-team in recent months.
Shaw has made just four appearances across all competitions this season for the Red Devils and played for the first time in the current Premier League on Wednesday night in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
Newcastle are short on left-back options and could definitely do with a player like Shaw in Rafa Benitez’s squad.
Chancel Mbemba and Javier Manquillo have spent most of the season playing there for the Magpies but both of them are more natural in other areas of the backline.
In other Newcastle United news, Benitez must make this Premier League speed machine his No 1 January priority.
