Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic looks set to secure a late transfer switch to former side Anderlecht, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
Ladbrokes have named the Belgian side, from who the Magpies signed the Serbian powerhouse back in 2015, as evens favourites to resign the 23-year-old before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.
Mitrovic’s former club are followed by Turkish side Besiktas, French outfit Bordeaux and Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Brighton in the hunt for his signing, all priced at 8/1 odds for his signing.
The emphatic update on odds suggest that the 33-cap Serbian international is set for the exit door at St James’ Park, having made just seven appearances, not one coming as a start in the Premier League, to take his total to 72 outings for the Magpies, having become a fans’ favourite with his impassioned displays on the pitch.
Football Insider verdict
A move back to Anderlecht seems a surprise considering Newcastle’s asking price for Mitrovic, which is reportedly in the region of £15million. The Belgian side are unlikely to have that kind of cash to splash, and would be especially reluctant on signing him for £2million more than they originally sold him. However, if a deal can be struck up that is beneficial for the Magpies, then there is no doubt he will be allowed to leave, with Rafael Benitez having chosen to cast him out of the first team set up in favour of Joselu and Dwight Gayle. What the north east club will need to do next is find a replacement, and with some additional funds under their belt, then a late swoop might just be possible.
