'Big concern' over Newcastle appointing Favre after reliable journalist update - pundit

Lucien Favre’s lack of Premier League experience is “a big concern” for Newcastle United.

That is the view of former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 63-year-old’s potential appointment at St. James’ Park.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk (October 27th), Favre is the favourite to succeed Steve Bruce.

The Swiss manager has been out of work since leaving Borussia Dortmund in December of last year.

He averaged an impressive points-per-game average of 2.01 from his time with the Bundesliga giants. (Transfermarkt)

However, Phillips fears he doesn’t have the experience to save a Newcastle side who are winless from 10 Premier League games this season.

“I think it is always a big concern when a manager with no Premier League experience comes into a side that is struggling.

“It is vital that they get this decision right. There has been a lot of hype surrounding the takeover. They need a manager who can handle the pressure and build something. Someone who is going to be there for a while.

“It is always a slight risk when you appoint somebody who has no Premier League experience. They are deep in a relegation battle. It is going to be a tough job for whoever is appointed.

“There will be funds in January to strengthen though which will help.”
