'Big' Tottenham-Valverde update from Fabrizio Romano baffles pundit
Ernesto Valverde would be a “big step up” for Tottenham from the likes of Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso, according to Noel Whelan.
However, the former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is worried about the length of time Valverde, 57, has been out of the game.
According to Fabrizio Romano (18 June), the ex-Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao boss has been contacted by Spurs regarding their vacancy.
Valverde has been out of work since January 2020 when he was sacked by Barcelona.
Whelan fears that is a long time for a manager to be out of work.
“You question why he has been out of work for so long,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Usually managers are not out of work for longer than a few months. 18 months is a long time for a manager to be away from the game.
“But Valverde would be a big step up from what Spurs have been looking at recently though, the likes of Fonseca and Gattuso.
“I’m not licking my lips at the thought though and that will likely be the case with a lot of Tottenham fans. I imagine a lot of them would be scratching their heads a bit and thinking, ‘What? Why?’
“It is a very strange situation at Spurs right now. How can it take this long to appoint a manager? Why are all of the talks breaking down?”
