Alan Hutton has revealed his surprise that Odsonne Edouard is not the top earner at Celtic.
The former Rangers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he thought the 22-year-old would be ahead of the rest at Parkhead.
The highest paid are believed to be 2019 signing Christopher Jullien, skipper Scott Brown and midfielder Callum McGregor, who signed a new five-year deal last November.
Asked if he was surprised Edouard may be earning less than some of his teammates, Hutton told Football Insider: “It does surprise me. I had a fair idea who the top earners were and I would definitely put Edouard in that category.
“It’s a bit of a strange one. Maybe he’s looking at it now and thinking that he wants to be on par with the likes of McGregor, Brown and all these kind of guys and I totally get that.
“For me he’s their main player so why wouldn’t he be? Maybe that’s why he’s holding off in talks, maybe he’s looking to his future and he wants to be financially sorted for what he believes he brings to the table.
“It’s a bit of a shock but I’m sure if he keeps improving with his performances and he keeps going the way he’s going, it’s a matter of time before that happens.”
Edouard has been in tremendous form up front this season, scoring 27 goals and chipping in with 19 assists across all competitions.
His current contract, which was signed back in 2018, runs until the summer of 2022.
