Celtic fans everywhere seem delighted that the club has completed the permanent deal to sign 20-year-old French striker Odsonne Edouard.
The move is seen as a real statement of intent from the Bhoys, who disclosed on their official website that the transfer deal is ‘the biggest transfer in Celtic’s history’.
A huge transfer fee is now set to put the player under different pressure than he had when he was a loan player with the Hoops last season.
The expectations will be huge for the hitman to prove he is worth the money the Bhoys have splashed out on him, especially in Europe.
Edouard was a bit part player for the Hoops in Europe last season, playing only three games in the Champions League and Europa League campaigns.
Even more damning, he didn’t start any of those games and played only a total of 43 minutes in the matches.
Brendan Rodgers preferred to stick with Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths for Europe last season, but you would imagine that situation will change next season.
You don’t smash the club’s transfer record for a player who will set on the bench for the biggest games of the season, which Europe almost always is for the Hoops these days.
Edouard will surely start the Champions League qualifiers in July, and it will be intriguing to see how he fares, as Rodgers doesn’t seem to be convinced so far that he is good enough for Europe.
That could all have changed now of course, and the pressure will be on the Frenchman to show that he belongs amongst the best players in Europe.
