Brendan Rodgers has admitted that midfielder Eboue Kouassi could be sent out on loan for the second-half of the season.
The 20-year-old joined the Scottish champions last year from Russian side Krasnodar for £3million, signing a four-year-contract.
However, injuries and the form of other central midfielders have limited the youngster’s chances of appearing in the side, and so far he has made only nine appearances in his first 12 months in Glasgow.
Now the Hoops manager wants the Ivorian to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie, and leave Celtic on loan and return to the club a better player who has played games.
“Eboue needs to be playing. It’s a bit like Kris Ajer last season. We can keep him about the squad but he might not play so much. If he goes out and plays it will improve him,” Rodgers said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Football Insider verdict
Loaning out Kouassi seems like a very wise move by Rodgers and all at Celtic. The player won’t want to be stuck on the bench for another five months, he needs game time, and he is going to find it difficult to come by in the Hoops’ extremely congested midfield. £3million was a lot of money spent on a then teenager, and so far he has found it difficult to live up to that price tag. Following in the footsteps of Ajer – who was at Kilmarnock for a year on loan and is now a part of the Hoops’ first-team – seems like a good way to judge if the Ivorian is going to make it in Glasgow. With a run of games on loan under his belt, he can then return to Celtic Park to challenge the likes of Scott Brown for a first-team place.
