'Big decisions' - Brentford boss Smith reels off list of excuses after defeat to Leeds
Brentford manager Dean Smith has reeled off a list of excuses for his side’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday.
The Whites, who had been on a 10 game winless streak stretching back to Boxing Day, managed to pick up their first victory of 2018 thanks to Liam Cooper’s first half header, the centre back helping to secure a vital three points in Paul Heckingbottom’s second home game.
However Smith was less than impressed with what he saw not only from his own side, but with the display of the officials and the state of the pitch at Elland Road, insisting that the decisions all fell the way of the home team.
He reeled off a list of excuses for their defeat to the press, quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post as saying: “Unfortunately the lad scores from an offside position. We’ve lost a game from a linesman’s decision.
“They left the grass longer to make it a slow game.
“We should have had a penalty when Neal Maupay gets thrown to the ground. You want the big decisions to go your way but they didn’t today.
“(The referee) should have let the Elland Road crowd referee the game.”
The three points for Leeds has not seen them move up the Championship table, remaining in 11th, but are now just one point behind the Bees, sitting in 10th, on 48 points, and are now just five points off the play off spots after Bristol City’s defeat to Cardiff City.
Their next game sees them take on Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Friday evening, with Boro having played out an enthralling 3-3 draw with north east rivals Sunderland in their last outing.
