Sources: Brentford submit bid for Aston Villa target Cox

Brentford have submitted a bid for Aston Villa goalkeeper target Matthew Cox, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Londoners have made a formal move for the AFC Wimbledon shot-stopper, 18, in the race for his signature.

A Brentford source has told Football Insider that the club have tabled an offer for Cox after making him a key target.

The teenage sensation is also wanted by Villa and Premier League new boys Norwich City, as revealed by this site in June.

Cox signed his first professional terms in May 2020 but is yet to make his first senior appearance.

David Raya is Brentford’s current number one and started 42 times throughout the Bees’ promotion-winning campaign in 2020-21.

Thomas Frank’s second-choice goalkeeper, Luke Daniels, was named on the club’s released list on 10th June.

Young keepers Ellery Balcombe and Patrik Gunnarson meanwhile both spent last season out on loan.

At Villa Park, Emiliano Martinez is the undisputed number one after a stellar 2020-21 and Copa America triumph with Argentina this summer.

Villa’s backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton joined Man United earlier this month following the expiry of his contract.

The club also confirmed that fellow shot-stopper Lovre Kalinic, whose Villa deal runs until 2023, will join Hadjuk Split on loan again after a successful spell there last term.

Cox featured twice for England Under-17s last February.

Sam Walker and Nikols Tzanev shared the gloves ahead of the youngster as Wimbledon escaped relegation in League One with an 18th-place finish.
