'Brilliant' - Exclusive: Bent drools over Aston Villa player who is overshadowed by teammate

Darren Bent gushed about Aston Villa centre-back Björn Engels following his performance in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Villa striker admitted that Engels deserves more credit for his displays this season as he does tend to get overshadowed by teammate Tyrone Mings a little bit.

Engels has only missed 15 minutes of the Villains’ Premier League campaign so far this season and has helped his side keep two clean sheets in the process.

Bent explained that Mings and Engels both doing well to be part of a brilliant back-four was only a good thing, even though he did suggested Mings got more attention in the media due to being English.

When asked if Engels deserves more credit as he seems to be overshadowed by Mings, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah he does, I think he did get away with one yesterday as the handball…I think that was blatant handball and why VAR didn’t pick up, I don’t know but you’re right.

“Mings is overshadowing him a little bit but as a pair, they’re doing really really well and again they both defended really well as they both put their bodies on the line, that’s the nucleus of a good team but also one who can be confident of what they’re doing as when you’re back-four is playing as well as they are, it’s brilliant for me.

“So for me, Engels is doing as well as Mings so…you’ve got to remember we’re going to talk about Mings more as he’s English.”

Villa spent £9million on signing Engels from French club Stade Reims in the summer, with Dean Smith recruiting a total of four centre-backs in the last transfer window.

The 25-year-old has made 11 appearances for the Villans so far and is contracted to stay at Villa Park until 2024.

In other Aston Villa news, Robinson has been gushing over a Villa star who “eyebrows were raised over”.
