Paul Robinson claimed that Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton would prove to be key to the club’s chances of staying in the Premier League this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Tottenham and Leeds United keeper stated that while eyebrows were raised over the Villans signing Heaton in the summer, he was a player who will help the club stay in the Premier League.
Heaton has conceded 16 goals in his first 10 appearances for the Villans but did manage to keep a clean sheet against both West Ham and Everton.
Robinson explained that Heaton would not only provide a massive boost to the Villans’ survival hopes due to being an excellent goalkeeper but would also be an asset in the dressing room.
When asked how important Heaton proved to be in the 3-0 loss to Manchester City, Robinson told Football Insider: “Tom was a very astute signing for Aston Villa, eyebrows were raised over the amount of money they paid and his age, but I think it was a position they needed to reinforce.
“Having worked with Heaton for 18 months at Burnley, I saw what an excellent professional and excellent goalkeeper he is and I think for Aston Villa to have a keeper of his calibre and man of his calibre in the dressing room will be a massive massive boost to their chances of staying in the Premier League this season.
“I think he will be key to that.”
The Villans spent £8million on signing Heaton from Burnley in the summer with Dean Smith claiming upon the shot-stopper’s arrival at Villa Park that he’d be a major asset due to his experience.
The 33-year-old has played 106 times in the Premier League during his career and has kept 27 clean sheets as well as conceded 148 goals in his outings.
In other Aston Villa news, Darren Bent was impressed by this Villans player despite the 3-0 loss to Manchester City.
