Scott Brown: Striker will learn more at Celtic than this struggling Premier League club

By Emma Sanders

Scott Brown has urged Moussa Dembele to stay at Celtic and concentrate on his career in Scotland rather than look to join Premier League side West Ham.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Hammers after a report appeared on the Insider column of the club’s official website suggesting a £20million bid had been made for a Scottish player.

Celtic have denied a bid was submitted but they still face a huge battle to keep hold of the youngster after he impressed in his opening six months at the club.

Despite interest from the Premier League, skipper Brown believes Dembele is currently at the best place to develop his career and he has urged his teammate to avoid linking up with Slaven Bilic at West Ham.

“He’s going to learn a lot more under the gaffer than probably, without being disrespectful, going to someone who is fighting relegation,” said Brown, as reported by the Evening Standard.

“The manager [Brendan Rodgers] has been a great boss, he’s been at Liverpool, and Moussa will learn a lot from him and the coaching staff.”

Dembele kick-started his career during a spell at Fulham where he was tipped to become the next Thierry Henry before joining Celtic in July.

He has since gone on to become a key member of Rodgers’ side as they have lifted the Betfred Cup and have soared to the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

In 36 appearances, he has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season, including a brace against Manchester City during the 3-3 draw in September’s Champions League blockbuster.

His last goal came in the Old Firm derby as Celtic sealed a 2-1 victory at the Ibrox.

Football Insider verdict:

Nobody at the club will want to lose Moussa Dembele this winter as they try to go a whole season undefeated. It could become one of the big stories of January as a lot of clubs will want to steal a march and grab his signature. In the knowledge that they won’t be able to keep him probably past the summer there’s definitely a sum of money that would be enough to convince Celtic to cash in now. It seems that £20million is not enough and clubs are balking at £30million. The sweet spot might be somewhere in the middle.
