Alex Bruce has revealed he’s been told by his father that Nabil Bentaleb is starting to look the part in Newcastle United training.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Russell Edge, the just-retired footballing son of Steve Bruce claims there have been encouraging signs from the former Tottenham midfielder.

Newcastle signed Bentaleb late in the January window from Schalke on a deal that runs for the rest of the season.

He has played the full 90 minutes in each of the club’s last two matches, a 0-0 draw against Norwich City and a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal.

Ex-Premier League defender Bruce, 35, shared some insight from his father after being asked which of the three new arrivals have impressed.

“Yeah, Bentaleb’s come in and you can see he’s been a good player,” Bruce told Football Insider. “He’s had a large chunk of not playing though at Schalke so he knew he needed a few games to get up to speed to the Premier League again.

“Dad said he looks like a good player, he was decent at Spurs and he’s got a nice left foot.

“You watch him technically, he’s very good. Gives them a little something different.”

Bentaleb has joined Newcastle after losing his starting place at Schalke.

He is out of contract at the Bundesliga club in the summer of 2021 and his Magpies deal includes an option to buy at the end of the season.
